Not as bad as I had expected from a C-grade 80’s sequel, but still no world-beater. I’m not squeamish, but a couple of scenes in this were pretty gross, and completely gratuitous.

Apart from a tendency to try to be overly cute, this is a pretty well-scripted crime flick; very well acted and stylishly directed. Robert Downey Jr’s smart-ass style suits the role perfectly, and Val Kilmer is great as usual. Pretty funny in parts as well

If you like intelligent, intricate and detailed plots that you have to think hard to make sense of, you’ll enjoy this film. Very long but well paced Read the rest of this entry »

As a massive fan of Philip Pullman’ books, it’s hard to be objective. The film is visually impressive and with a great narrative drive thanks to the source material. Lyra is just a great character, and thankfully her essence is preserved in the screenplay. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s obvious what a low budget this was made on - but it’s interesting because it shows how a real talent can start with almost nothing and still create a very watchable piece of entertainment. It’s the excellent pacing that makes it work - some nice humour as well.
